5 Essential Oils for Weight Reduction

First of all, you’re probably wondering why I wrote reduction instead of loss and there is good reason behind it. Most people when they lose something, they try their best to find it again. It’s just looking at it differently…..you don’t really want to lose your weight, you really want to reduce it, to be rid of it. It’s just a new way of thinking and it just might get you in the right frame of mind. The key to any goal is first and foremost your state of mind. We don’t want to be mentally sabotaging our physical efforts. This is why I wrote reduction and not the popular ‘loss’. Now to the nitty gritty of Essential oils.

There are a number of Essential oils that can be extremely beneficial when adding to your weight reduction regime.

Here are the top five!!

1. Grapefruit Essential Oil

There are a myriad of compounds found in Grapefruit Essential oil, however, the most important two when it comes to weight reduction are Limonene and Nootkatone. Limonene is a phytochemical that protects the DNA and cells from damage. In fact, Grapefruit has one of the highest sources of Limonene available. The other compound is called Nootkatone and this particular compound has been found to stimulate energy metabolism.

Grapefruit Essential Oil is also a great diuretic which means that it assists in the break down and dispersal of the body’s waste including excess fluid. Additionally, it acts as a stimulant to the digestive and lymphatic system, so it can help support a healthy metabolism, help reduce cellulite and help curb the appetite. It’s great inhaled via a diffuser and/or applied topically by being added to a carrier oil for massaging. However, it is important to note that when applying Grapefruit to the skin (always with a carrier oil) it can cause the possibility of skin sensitivity when in the sun.

To get the best out of your Grapefruit Essential Oil, make sure you pair it with Patchouli Essential oil as when the two are combined they have the ability to curb cravings and suppress your appetite.

2. Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint Essential oil has been proven to be a natural energiser and reduces fatigue. Furthermore, it’s great for reducing hunger cravings. This was proven in the following study by Wheeling Jesuit University.

“Effects of Peppermint Scent on Appetite Control and Caloric Intake”
Alex Reed, Jude Almeida, Ben Wershing, and Bryan Raudenbush

Previous research indicates that inhalation of certain scents may reduce hunger levels.  The present study evaluated hunger levels during peppermint inhalation vs. non-inhalation, in addition to actual food consumption and dietary evaluation (e.g., fat intake, caloric intake, vitamin and mineral intake, etc.) over a period of two weeks.  In a within-subjects design, participants completed a peppermint inhalation condition (administered every 2 hours) and a non-inhalation condition.  Each condition was performed for 5 days during separate weeks.  During the protocol, participant rated their hunger level every two hours and completed a food diary listing everything they consumed for the two five-day periods.  Results indicate participants consumed significantly fewer total calories, calories from saturated fat, total fat, and sugar during the peppermint inhalation condition.  Participants also rated their hunger level significantly lower during peppermint inhalation.  The primary implication of these results is that peppermint scent can be used as an effective adjunct to decrease appetite, decrease hunger cravings, and consume fewer calories, which may lead to weight reduction and greater overall health.

3. Lemon Essential Oil

Fantastic for detoxification as well as mood enhancing. Inhaling Lemon Essential oil can keep you motivated and also boost your immune system.

Lemon Essential oil also contains the compound Limonene and acts as an appetite suppressant as well as helping to prevent a build up of fat deposits within the liver. A great functioning liver can equate to an easy reduction in your weight.

4. Ginger Essential Oil

A 2013 study published in the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology concluded that ginger essential oil possesses antioxidant activity as well as significant anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive properties.

This widely used Essential oil supports digestion and assists in reducing inflammation within the body, creating a healthy gut. Having a healthy gut is sometimes the key to a successful decrease on the scale.

Conjointly, it’s a great oil to help suppress sugar cravings.

5. Cinnamon Essential Oil

Another great oil for balancing blood sugar levels and reducing inflammation in the body. As we are aware unstable blood sugar levels can create fatigue, overeating and weight gain. By adding Cinnamon Essential Oil to your massage oil you allow the benefits to be absorbed dermally allowing it to flow straight into your blood stream.

So if you are on a weight reduction journey, adding these beneficial Essential oils can greatly increase your chances of success!!

Note: It is extremely important that you use 100% pure Essential oils and it is even better if they are Certified Organic. Certified Organic oils are botanically pure and haven’t been adulterated in any way. Synthetic Essential Oils and Fragrance oils should never be used for therapeutic reasons and should never be applied to the skin.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a medical condition, seek the advice of a qualified Aromatherapist, Naturopath or medical practitioner. Certain oils are hazardous to use during these times and can be a contraindication with certain medications.

“For aromatherapy, we should only be using essential oils that are botanically pure. This means we should know the botanical name of the plant, we should be able to confirm the part of the plant used, the country of origin, and the extraction process. We are also expecting that the oil is not rectified or adulterated in any way. The only way we can confirm this nowadays is to ensure that the oils we use are certified organic.” – Salvatore Battaglia (Aromatherapist, Founder of Perfect Potion)
